Project Overview: MR Acoustics was commissioned by Breverett Ltd. to perform sound insulation testing on a conversion into a residential property located at The Barn, Trades Lane, Coupar Angus. The property consisted of two attached dwellings with a separating floor between them. The primary objective was to ensure that the construction met the sound insulation standards set in Section 5 of the Scottish Building Standards Technical Handbook 2020 for domestic properties.
Challenges:
During initial testing, one of the separating floors failed to meet the required sound insulation standards for airborne and impact noise. This presented a significant challenge as the project needed to comply with the stringent requirements of the Scottish Building Standards.
Through investigative works, it was determined that the failure in airborne noise insulation was due to flanking noise traveling down the external walls, while the failure in impact noise insulation was caused by a lack of isolation between the finished floor construction and the external walls. To address these issues, MR Acoustics recommended the installation of Regupol 3912 Acoustic Underlay to properly isolate the floor, alongside lining the external walls to control the flanking noise.
Results: The re-testing demonstrated that both the airborne and impact sound insulation of the separating floor now met the required standards. The airborne sound insulation achieved DnT,w ratings of 54dB, while the impact sound insulation achieved L’nT,w ratings of 57dB, both within acceptable limits.
Conclusion: The successful outcome of this project highlights MR Acoustics' expertise in diagnosing and resolving complex sound insulation issues. By identifying the specific causes of the initial failures and providing targeted solutions, the project at The Barn, Trades Lane, Coupar Angus, was brought up to compliance, ensuring a quieter and more comfortable living environment for the occupants.
