Mark Walker Architect approached MR Acoustics to conduct a Noise Impact Assessment (NIA) for Grouchos, a property located at 132 Nethergate, Dundee. The assessment was necessary to support a retrospective planning application (24/00387/FULL) following the installation of two air condenser units and an air handling unit (AHU) at the site. Initially, planning permission was granted in July 2023 for changing the property’s use from retail (Class 1) to a public house (Sui Generis). However, during the installation, it was not possible to install plant in the intended location, prompting a need for a detailed noise assessment.
The primary goal of this assessment was to measure and predict the noise levels generated by the newly installed plant equipment and determine its impact on the nearest noise-sensitive receptor (NSR), which is a newly built student accommodation neighboring the site. The assessment also aimed to provide recommendations for mitigating any noise levels exceeding Dundee City Council's criteria.
The assessment revealed that the noise levels at the noise sensitive receptors were above the acceptable thresholds set by Dundee City Council. Specifically, the daytime noise levels exceeded the NR 45 criterion, and nighttime levels surpassed the NR 35 criterion. This highlighted the need for noise mitigation measures to comply with local regulations.
MR Acoustics successfully identified the noise impact of the newly installed plant at Grouchos and provided actionable recommendations to mitigate this impact. By implementing these measures, the client can ensure compliance with Dundee City Council’s noise regulations, thereby securing the necessary planning approval.
